Prostate Specific Antigen Test (PSA)
The PSA test is a blood test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate gland.
What the PSA test is used for
The PSA test is used to:
Screen for prostate cancer (after discussing the benefits and risks with a healthcare provider).
Help evaluate symptoms that may be caused by prostate conditions.
Monitor treatment in people diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Check for recurrence after prostate cancer treatment.
What high PSA levels may mean
An elevated PSA level does not automatically mean prostate cancer. It can be caused by several conditions, including:
prostate cancer
benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
prostatitis
Urinary tract infection
Recent ejaculation (can temporarily raise PSA)
Recent prostate procedures or vigorous cycling
What low PSA levels mean
A low PSA level is generally reassuring, but it does not completely rule out prostate cancer. Some prostate cancers produce very little PSA.
